What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis isn’t real, but it is effective at bringing about change. Now I know that doesn’t make any sense, but it is true. Hypnosis is not a thing that can exist. It is not a tangible item that you can hold.
Hypnosis is a method of communicating with both the conscious and unconscious mind. It is a way of communicating to bring about the desired state of mind that someone needs to be in. You are already aware and exposed to hypnosis every single day of your life. When a friend makes you laugh, they have communicated in a way that alters your mind set and alters you physically and biochemically as well – laughter produces endorphins that make you feel good! The same when they make you cringe about an embarrassing situation – it’s all hypnotic communication in that it alters your state of mind and your mood.
Hypnotic communication is used by everyone everywhere without people knowing it. All communication is hypnotic in that it tries to change your mood and your mindset.
Now, the majority of people have seen hypnosis shows where people have been quickly and suddenly put into a trance and made do things for entertainment purposes. Is that actually real? If it is a good hypnotist, then yes it is. Many people though, use people planted in the crowd or just get people to act stupid and pretend to be in a trance.
When people go up on stage, they are willing to and are willing to do what the hypnotist ask them. In a scenario like that, if there is no rapport between the person and the hypnotist, then what the hypnotist is trying to do will not work. This is the same in a therapeutic context also. I was recently speaking with someone who had been to a hypnotist before she came to see me and described the way she didn’t like the hypnotist – she didn’t like his voice, his tone and how he acted. Needless to say, she didn’t stop smoking after that session with him.
There are many forms of hypnosis nowadays, all trying to do the same thing – bring bout a change in your mind. There is direct hypnosis, which is a more traditional and autocratic in a sense – “look into my eyes etc etc…”
There is the other main side which everyone uses which is indirect or conversational hypnosis. Again this is going back to the laughing/cringing with friends.
Is everyone able to be hypnotised, yes of course. Some people point to studies showing that only a certain amount of people are able to be hypnotised. The Hillgard test says that around 95% of people can be put into deep altered states – what they failed to mention was that these trance inductions were done in a lab, with the same pre recorded tape for everyone.
Hypnosis is about being flexible with your communication and using what is known as bio feedback. A good hypnotist will be able to utilise the verbal and non verbal feedback from a client to adjust his behaviour and approach to get the desired change the client wants.
Hypnosis gives people more control over their mind, not less. It shows you how to tap into the vast unconscious resources that you have and makes it easier for you to access them and make improvements.
Hypnosis has been used to get drug addicts off heroin, alcoholics off alcohol and smokers off the fags. It has been used in medical procedures for years.
A surgeon in Kildare, Dr. Jack Gibson, performed over 4000 operations using just hypnosis and no drugs to control the pain. He even amputated a patient’s leg with nothing more than hypnosis to control the pain and keep the patient relaxed. These operations have been recorded on tape as un wavering proof of the bodies ability to control pain and other bodily functions.
Hypnosis is in it’s infancy. We are still unsure about all of it’s potential and that is a good thing. All your immune response and biochemical signals come from the brain, the parts controlled by your unconscious processes which opens up more interesting avenues for hypnotic communication.
