Rock Climbing

climbing-29As a Climbing Instructor for over 12 years, it has become apparent to me that there is a common issue for both novice and experienced climbers alike. Whether pushing a 5+ or 8a, leading 6a or 7c, every climber has a challenge to keep pushing him/herself to improve. For some, a “go for it” attitude is all that is required, they believe they can make the move to complete the route, they feel totally comfortable with their belayer. For these people, progression may be fast and steady. For most of us however, it is not quite as simple. The more I talk to climbers, the more a common thread of a plateau stage in their climbing emerges. No sooner do they jump up a grade, than they end up stuck on the new grade for a long period of time.

It became clear to me that it’s not simply a physicalUpload (17) mk2 issue when it comes to hitting a certain grade. I am not for one minute saying that anybody can climb 8a straight off. What I am saying is that to make the transition from 6a to 6b, or from top rope to leading, may not be as much a physical issue as more a state of mind. Let’s face it, if you can climb a 6b on a top rope, there should be no reason why you can’t physically lead a 5+ with ease. So why do so many people have a problem when it comes to leading for the first time? They can physically climb the route but once they get past the first or second clip they freeze, get pumped out, they panic. Again, they can physically do the climb, it is the language in their mind that is stopping them from climbing.

I use Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) to Copy of P1010108overcome many of the mental barriers that are put in our way both consciously and subconsciously. NLP is an extremely powerful set of techniques that enable you to better understand what is going on in your mind and how to rid yourself of the limiting beliefs and thoughts that are holding you back, both in climbing and life in general. By using these techniques I can help you to understand what beliefs and subconscious thoughts are limiting your progress, and change those to be more positive, allowing you to progress more quickly and positively.

By identifying these types of thoughts, I am able to “re program” the subconscious to naturally think positive beliefs rather than negative ones. The process is very simple and requires only that you are willing to let these limiting beliefs go, both consciously and subconsciously.

P7030012 mk2As both a Climbing Instructor and Master NLP Practitioner, I am in a unique position of understanding the physical art of climbing as well as recognising the mental barriers that hold back so many climbers from achieving their full potential. There are a number of fantastic “technique” videos on the market that focus for example on the physical positioning of the body, stretching, and diet. These videos are a must for any climber who is serious about improving. However, we each have a tremendous, but as yet un-tapped resource to enable us to achieve so much more, not just in climbing but in our whole lives. It is becoming more and more accepted that our thoughts both consciously and subconsciously are able to make huge changes in our lives. NLP provides the tools and techniques to make these changes.
