What is NLP….?

What Is NLP

NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) began in the early 1970’s with the work of Richard Bandler and John Grinder in modeling human excellence, at the University of California at Santa Cruz. They modelled the linguistic and behavior patterns of leading people, initially in the area of psychology. They were able to identify what these people did that made them effective so that these patterns could be precisely defined and explicitly taught.

NLP describes, in very precise terms, the images, sounds, and feeling that make up our inner and outer world. ‘Neuro’ refers to the mind and how we organize our mental life. ‘Linguistic’ is about language, how we use it, and how it affects us. ‘Programming’ is about our sequences of repetitive behavior and how we act with purpose. So, when an experience is sorted out at the linguistic and neurological levels, procedures and techniques can be created that allow you to change the structure of your experience and run your own brain.

Since the 70’s, the work of Bandler and Grinder and others has evolved into the field of NLP as it exists today. Valuable contributions have added to the field, making it applicable in many areas such as: business, therapy, education, health, negotiation, parenting, self improvement, sales, creativity, motivation, presentation skills, and the helping professions.

NLP is international in scope with many books, audio, and video recordings on the applications of NLP available widely. Several journals exist that chronicle the newest developments in NLP. There are now over 150 training centers and institutes around the globe teaching NLP.
