The NLP Presuppositions
These are a list of beliefs that allow us to change. You may or you may not believe all, some or none of these. The more you do believe, the more you are likley to succeed in changing any aspects of your life you wish to change. These are the ground rules we as practitioners use to effect change in a client.
- The Mind/Body Is A Single, Cybernetic System
- What you think affects your body. What’s going on in your body affects how you think and feel emotionally.
- Communication Is Redundant
- We communicate with our surrounding on a number of channels. Some people are more sensitive and aware of certain channels than others.
- The Law Of Requisite Variety
- The more flexibility you have, the greater chance you have to influence any given situation.
- The Map Is Not The Territory
- To experience something new we must call on past experiences to help us evaluate this new experience. Since everybody has different past experiences everybody with generate their own idea of what that new experience is. Therefore our map of our world (our list of experiences) will be different to everybody else. So our map of reality is completely different to everybody else’s map. So you have to ask yourself, If everybody has their own map of “reality” and they are all different, What then, does the “real” map of reality look like?
- People Work Perfectly & Always Make The Best Choice Available To Them At The Time
- People don’t do things for no reason. If they make a bad behavioral choice, it means their programming in that context doesn’t have a better choice available for them.
- Choice Is Better Than No Choice
- Many problems are the result of limited choices in a context. After all, if a person were more flexible, they’d have a better chance at finding a solution, wouldn’t they?
- Every Behavior Has A Positive Intention
- No matter what the action, a person’s behaviour will be for a positive intention. no matter how terrible, in their mind there will be a positive intention.
- We Create Our Experience
- This is so true! Might be hard to grasp for some people but what happens to us we create. Two people standing side by side at a concert. They both hear the music and experience exactly the same environment. One loved the concert the other hated it. Both had the same physical experience but each created their own interpretation of it.
- People Have All The Resources They Need
- We all have the power within us to make the changes we need to make. We are sometime so far up our own problem we can’t see the resources we need.
- You Can Not, Not Communicate
- Two living things with an awareness of each other have no choice but to communicate. Even ignoring each other sends a message!
- Change Makes Change
- If you want to change the way someone else behaves, change the way you behave.
- If One Person Can Do Something, Others Can
- “Talent” is largely the result of mental strategies.
- Outcome vs. Problem
- “If at first you don’t succeed, try try again” How about, “If at first you don’t succeed, change what your doing to match your outcome and try again”
- Failure vs. Feedback
- When you’re driving, if you drift a little to one side of your lane, what do you do? You correct–you don’t give up!
